Private Security Glossary

Plain-English definitions of the terms agencies throw at you — PSARA, PSO, HHMD/DFMD, SOP, armed versus unarmed, beats, relievers and more. Read this once and every security quote becomes transparent.

PSARA
The Private Security Agencies (Regulation) Act, 2005 — India's law requiring security agencies to hold a state licence, verify and train guards, and follow deployment standards. Always ask an agency for its PSARA licence number.
Controlling Authority
The officer or body each state designates to issue and enforce PSARA licences — handling applications, renewals, inspections and cancellations.
PSO (Personal Security Officer)
A trained close-protection professional assigned to an individual — covering threat assessment, route planning, travel security and emergency extraction. Distinct from a site guard.
Bouncer
Entry and floor-control personnel for clubs, parties and events — handling ID checks, capacity discipline, de-escalation and safe dispersal.
HHMD / DFMD
Hand-Held and Door-Frame Metal Detectors — frisking equipment operated by trained guards at managed entry lanes for events, venues and facilities.
SOP (Standard Operating Procedure)
The written post orders governing a deployment: duties, shift timings, patrol beats, escalation contacts and reporting formats.
Armed vs Unarmed Guard
Unarmed guards handle access, patrol and deterrence with training and supervision. Armed guards carry licensed weapons for high-risk sites — deployable only within licence terms after threat assessment.
Beat / Patrol Beat
The fixed route and schedule a guard walks during a shift, logged hourly. Beats convert wandering presence into verifiable coverage.
Reliever
The backup guard who covers a post during leave or absence so no position goes unmanned — deployed same-shift from the zone hub.
RWA
Resident Welfare Association — the elected body managing a housing society, typically the contracting party for society security deployments.
Access Control
Systems and procedures governing who enters where: badges, biometrics, visitor enrolment, material passes and after-hours permissions — operated with guard support.
Incident Report
The written record of any security event: what happened, when, who responded and what followed. The backbone of accountability and insurance claims.
